Book Club: December Books

Updated: Jan 2, 2021

It's been two epic months since we began our virtual book club, and I almost can't believe how quickly this year has gone! For November's book club, we are so happy to say we welcomed some new people to the Island. This means, Jo is finally able to talk to more people and hopefully not continue talking to a coconut in between tapings of the podcast.

Our lovely members have opted for 'retellings' this month, which are books where an already widely-known story is told in a new context. This can either be with a modern twist, new locations or new themes derived from the original. As always, we have two books for listeners, members and fans to read from, and they are:

A CURSE SO DARK & LONELY (AF) by Brigid Kemmerer

Fall in love, break the curse. Break the curse, save the kingdom. Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall, is cursed. Forced to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he can only be freed by love. But at the end of each autumn he is transformed into a beast hell-bent on destruction, and after so many failed attempts, his kingdom and its people are barely holding on. Harper's life has never been easy, but she's learned to be tough enough to survive. She won't let anything hold her back, not her cerebral palsy or her mother's deteriorating health. But when she is sucked into Rhen's world, nothing is as it seems. Powerful forces are standing against Emberfalll ... and it will take more than a broken curse to save it from utter ruin.

A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city in the grip of chaos. At its heart is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang - a network of criminals far above the law. Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations. And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette's first love . . . and first betrayal. But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper. Of a contagion, a madness. Of a monster in the shadows. As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns - and grudges - aside and work together, for if they can't stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule.
